Following just three years out of the workforce while I assisted at home with our four young children, I found that my warehousing and security skills were no longer recognised without formal qualification. No employer would acknowledge my 11 years of experience – all they wanted to see was a Certificate II in Security Services, a Senior First Aid Certificate or a Forklift License.  These don’t come cheaply, and were certainly beyond my finances.

Everything changed when I visited The Salvation Army Employment Plus. They helped me obtain my Certificate II through recognition of prior learning, and organised a First aid course within 24 hours. One week later, they sent me on a forklift course. In just three weeks, The Salvation Army Employment Plus had achieved what two previous Job Network providers could not in two and a half years.

Their assistance continued after I found employment as a subcontractor to a security firm. When they found out that I needed a vehicle to maintain my earnings, they organised the purchase of a vehicle my boss owned.

Having been unemployed for some ten months, and being fifty-five years of age, I seriously doubted my chances of gaining work. I put out more than two hundred job applications, yet did not receive any positive feedback from the many service providers I contacted. I was seriously considering selling my house and living on the earnings.

When they found out I had been unemployed for 173 weeks, they helped negotiate a package of employment with the school I had been volunteering at, through their Skills Enhancement Initiative. This meant that even though the school was not looking to formally hire anyone, I got the job!
